A new blog to mark the start of a new journey

We are just a few weeks from our next move and we're getting more excited day by day. I'm starting this blog as a way to document the next two years of our lives as we settle into our new home in Yokosuka, Japan. (It's pronounced "yo-cos-ka" as I was snidely corrected by a stranger at a military function, but I'll save you the public humiliation and just start things off the right way!) I chose the name The Floating Dandelions because that is the way it feels to be a military family at times, we are uprooted and replanted and we JUST ROLL WITH IT. Every few years we float on to somewhere new and we put down new roots. We did ask for Japan as our number one choice for this move (we were allowed to choose three cities, as long as they were home ports of Naval Aircraft Carriers), but even though we had a tiny feeling of control it was soon dashed. The detailer who had originally given us verbal orders and had said, "Everyone who asks for Japan gets it!" changed his tune a few months later and said, "It doesn't look like Japan is going to happen." At that point my heart felt crushed. I had researched and planned and gotten my hopes up (like I always promise myself I am NOT going to do!). Luckily our final orders came through and we did get Japan! We hugged and talked and jumped around and our hearts nervously pounded. Soon afterwards, the reality that we would soon be leaving friends and family hit us and we could see it hit them as well. We are once again going to float on and since we are the strong family that we are, we are going to embrace this move and make the best of our two years in Japan. These next few weeks are the bittersweet times of goodbyes, and it's always so hard, but we still look forward to arriving at our new home in just a few weeks.
